PLAID

My first project of the year is "Plaid." Call up children to the front to point out lines and colors that make up plaid. Then we draw lines all the way across the paper from LEFT to RIGHT. And then from TOP to BOTTOM. Fill up the page and use lots of different colors. I have the Prang "Kantroll" crayons to use for this. They are easy to hold and colors blend together.

 SHAPES, LINES AND PATTERNS
Most of the time our projects will take more than one class period to complete. Since our time is only 35 minutes, I will break projects into parts. Sometimes they will just naturally separate into different steps. This project was developed when I thought my classes needed more cutting time and I added symmetry into the procedure.
First students chose three pieces of construction paper and folded each in half. They were directed to cut out a shape, starting on the fold and ending on the fold.
Next, the pieces were opened up and glued down on a  piece of black construction paper.
During the next class period, we discussed lines and drawing shapes. I teach my students that there are three kinds of lines - STRAIGHT, CURVED AND ZIG ZAG. Students used oil pastel and drew lines on the shapes. They could use one kind of line on each of the shapes, repeating the line to fill the space.
To finish, we made patterns by repeating shapes drawn with  oil pastels on the black BACKGROUND area.
